Niños Buscan Hogar -- Children Seeking their Home

Every weeknight on Colombian Institutional Television, there is a program that lasts just about 1 minute called Niños Buscan Hogar. This is a program where ICBF can publish the photograph and identifying information of children who are in Protective Custody. ICBF publicizes these pictures in hopes of finding family members somewhere in the country that might be able to assume responsibility for and the care of the child. Many of the children adopted by ICBF have appeared on the program. Here is an example of what the program is like:

I've been reading your blog for some time now, but I've never left a comment. I love it!! We've been on the waiting list for 2 years now for siblings from Colombia, so it's awesome to learn about their country before I go there. This program that's on TV -- it's great if it reunites the kids with family members....but it just breaks my heart -- I wish I could take them all home! Thanks for all you do with your blog!

Amy, thank you very much for your message. I actually truly wish I would get more :) Sometimes I wonder if anyone is actually reading this blog. So, comments help me feel like I'm not talking to myself.

With respect to the program, not every child will appear on the program, but many do. It breaks my heart too.

How close are you to a referral?

We read your blog religiously! Loved the segment about the unique names and learning about all the different traditions! Our dossier was just approved by ICBF and I believe it is now going to the region our little girl is. Hoping we will travel before the end of the year!

Yes, she is a waiting child. We got her official referral yesterday. No updated photos though :( Just a long social worker report and birth certificate. I think we will be going through Bucaramanaga

Hello again -- I had answered your message, but it seems it didn't go throught correctly, so here I am again. As far as our referral, they tell us it could take another year still. The wait is sooooo long, but we are excited! Take care!

The myth of the Madremonte (Mother Mountain), and I do say myth though many campesinos in Colombia believe in her today, has it's roots in the indigenous cultures of Colombia and is known throughout much of Colombia including Antioquia, Caldas, Arauca, Caqueta, Amazonas, Guainia, and perhaps more departments. The Madremonte looks like a large woman. She has large, bony hands, large teeth and Betty Davis Eyes -- which on closer examination glow. Her body is covered in leaves and moss.
